Darrell Tangen is a Photography instructor. He began teaching at DCTC in 1988.
Darrell has a master's degree in education from St. Mary's University. He has bachelor's degree in industrial education from the University of Minnesota. He also has an A.A.S. degree in technical communications from Anoka-Ramsey Community College and a technical diploma in photographic technology from Staples, formerly Staples Area Vocational-Technical Institute.
His extensive industry experience includes:
one year as a troubleshooting team leader at Agfa Corporation in Plymouth
five years as technical operations manager and trainer for Proex Photo Systems in Edina
one year as a photolab trainer at Rabbit Photo in Australia
10 years of corporate training and management experience with Pako Corporation, a manufacturer of photo processing equipment in Golden Valley
Darrell won DCTC Teacher of the Year awards in 1997 and 2004. He earned the DCTC Star Award for designing and building the college Web site. An avid photographer, he has won numerous ribbons and awards for photographs entered in local, regional and international competitions.
"I feel more like a coach than a teacher," says Darrell, regarding his educational philosophy. "We all are lifelong learners and need to share our experiences so that we can collectively improve our lives."
The best part of his job as a DCTC instructor is the "flexibility and freedom to continue to explore and teach new technologies while watching those 'light bulbs' come on."
Darrell has wide and varied interests and hobbies, including scuba diving, hiking, camping, drag racing, old car restoration, motorcycling, woodworking, and building furniture.
