Major Description

This program provides essential knowledge, skills and abilities that can be applied to the ever changing and highly competitive world of business. In this multidisciplinary degree, students understand business from management, financial and marketing perspectives. Graduates can transfer to select four-year institutions to earn more advanced degrees.

Work Environment

Business professionals generally work in clean, comfortable, well-lit office spaces. Travel or relocation can be part of the job. However, improved technology continues to increase telecommuting from home offices, which along with teleconferencing, has reduced travel requirements.

Job Outlook

According to ISEEK, Minnesota's career, education and job resource, employment for business administrators is expected to grow 3 percent in Minnesota by the year 2020. ISEEK: "There will be a need for about 6,610 new General and Operations Managers to meet market demand between 2010-2020. This includes the demand due to replacement (workers leaving the occupation or retiring) as well as growth."

Graduates secure employment in positions such as Chief Operating Officer (COO), Facilities Manager, Plant Manager, General Manager (GM), Plant Superintendent, Store Manager, Vice President of Operations, Warehouse Manager, Director of Operations and Operations Manager among many others.

Student Clubs and Organizations

DCTC features active, industry-relevant clubs for Business Administration students right on campus. Getting involved in these clubs allows you to make the most of your college experience and gives you an edge when seeking employment. The following clubs are open to all Business Administration students:

Business Professionals of America (BPA)
Business Professionals of America is the leading CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in accounting, business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields.

Lions Club
Lions are an international network of 1.3 million people from over 200 countries who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Students will be able to help determine the types of services the club will provide based on the needs of the campus and surrounding community.

SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization for students in trade, industrial, technical, and health occupation programs in community and technical colleges. There are nearly 100 competitions through SkillsUSA that relate to programs of study at DCTC or leadership skills. Students who compete and take first place in Minnesota will advance to nationals. Participation is SkillsUSA is a great addition to your resume!
