Major Description

This program prepares students for employment in administrative support. Students use computer systems for document processing and file management tasks. It teaches the expertise needed for creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, databases, electronic presentations and Internet navigation research. Administrative assistants may be called upon to communicate, organize, coordinate, and integrate data.

This is the ideal major for people in the workforce looking for a challenge or ways to advance their careers and gives them an opportunity to obtain Microsoft Certification for the required certification classes.

Graduates find employment in administrative support in a wide variety of businesses, including but not limited to corporate headquarters, insurance companies, banks, manufacturing firms and government agencies.

Job Outlook

According to ISEEK, Minnesota's career, education and job resource, employment for secretaries and administrative assistants is expected to grow 3.4 percent in Minnesota by the year 2020. ISEEK: "There will be a need for about 2,230 new Secretaries and Administrative Assistants to meet market demand between 2010-2020. This includes the demand due to replacement (workers leaving the occupation or retiring) as well as growth."

Graduates secure employment in positions such as administrative assistants, administrative secretaries, office assistants, Administrative Support Assistants (ASA), administrative technicians, clerk typists, department secretaries, and office managers.

Student Clubs and Organizations

DCTC features active, industry-relevant clubs for Executive & Administrative Assistant students right on campus. Getting involved in these clubs allows you to make the most of your college experience and gives you an edge when seeking employment. The following clubs are open to all Executive & Administrative Assistant students:

Business Professionals of America (BPA)
Business Professionals of America is the leading CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in accounting, business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields.

Lions Club
Lions are an international network of 1.3 million people from over 200 countries who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Students will be able to help determine the types of services the club will provide based on the needs of the campus and surrounding community.

SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization for students in trade, industrial, technical, and health occupation programs in community and technical colleges. There are nearly 100 competitions through SkillsUSA that relate to programs of study at DCTC or leadership skills. Students who compete and take first place in Minnesota will advance to nationals. Participation is SkillsUSA is a great addition to your resume!
