Landscape Horticulture -Professional Affiliations

Students in our Landscape Horticulture program are encouraged to participate as student members in trade and professional organizations on state and national levels as a superb way to achieve professional growth and leadership experience.

Because our program is actively involved in organizations such as PLANET and the MNLA, we gain a strong state and national presence while keeping our curriculum current and robust. Students encounter additional learning experiences while making important industry contacts. They also benefit on the job front as graduates from a program recognized nationally and statewide.

Professional Landcare Network

As the top national trade organization serving the U.S. green industry, PLANET is known for partnering with as wide range of educational institutions. LAHT at DCTC is currently the only PLANET-accredited academic program in Minnesota. Our Landscape Horticulture Club operates as one of the organization's member clubs.

PLANET Student Career Days is an annual event offering landscape horticulture students the chance to interact with other students as well as employers and educators from around the country. Held at a different college every spring, the SCD features a career fair plus an array of competitions, workshops and tours.

Our program has brought student teams to the SCD since 1985. California Polytechnic Institute in Pomona, Calif., hosted the 2009 event. Chattahoochee Technical College will hold the SCD April 8–11, 2010, on its North Metro Campus in Acworth, Ga.

Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association

The DCTC Landscape Horticulture program is intensively involved in the MNLA with our faculty participating on association committees and attending numerous educational functions. Many of our students become student members, attending MNLA educational workshops before joining association committees as graduates.

The Minnesota Green Expo, the annual winter convention cosponsored by the MNLA and the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF), is the largest trade show in the region, offering a three-day smorgasbord of educational workshops. Held in January at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the event attracts many of our students—especially for the job fair.

The MNLA Certified Professional program certifies industry members through a rigorous examination. More than 100 DCTC grads are certified, and one out of 10 MNLA Certified Professionals in the state of Minnesota were enrolled in our program.

Awarding two scholarships to DCTC students each year, the MNLA Foundation has made several grants to the LAHT program for various educational projects.
