Kaye, Deb
Deb Kaye is a first aid/CPR instructor. She started teaching at DCTC in 1996.
Deb has bachelor's degrees in health education and physical education from Western Michigan University, located in Kalamazoo.
A nationally registered emergency medical technician, she is an expert in emergency medical services with an emphasis on wilderness first aid.
She has extensive industry experience, having worked as an EMT for Sunburg Ambulance, Lakes Area Rural Responders, and the Twin Cities Red Cross EMS Team.
Deb is a technical content specialist for McGraw-Hill. She provides professional consultation on the publisher's core emergency product line, which includes among other titles Standard First Aid, CPR & AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Pediatric First Aid.
"To facilitate true learning you have to teach the concept so that the transfer of learning can take place," says Deb, regarding her teaching philosophy. "Experience in the classroom has taught me that not all students learn the first time something is being taught. To grasp the concept and have learning take place, the student needs to hear, analyze, digest, and apply the information in order to retain it.
"Experience has also taught me that using multiple teaching methods helps prepare students by bridging the gap between what is learned in the classroom and what is learned in life.
"I motivate and inspire my students to create a fun, positive learning environment that will empower them to not only be successful on the job, but in their lives as well."
Her students are the best part of her job as a DCTC instructor. She enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with her family.
