Law Enforcement Training
The Law Enforcement Training Program offers learning opportunities for various levels and assignments of law enforcement personnel. Courses are approved for peace officer continuing education credits. Training courses for officers and other personnel are held at Dakota County Technical College in the Public Safety Training Center or can be brought to your location.

Course Descriptions
Advanced POST Pursuit
Cost: $210
This course includes the POST required lecture and legal liabilities information, followed by student participation in driving range exercises and skill refresher and development. On course driving exercises, including mock pursuit scenarios, provide opportunities for situational analysis, management and decision-making for the line officer and supervisory personnel. The course is completed with a qualification exercise involving a P-2 emergency-response obstacle course which the officer must successfully navigate.
PIT/TVI Pursuit Course
Cost: $280
For each officer that attends this course needs to provide a disposable car.*
This course is designed to teach the officer in the techniques of PIT (Pursuit Immobilization Technique) and TVI (Tactical Vehicle Intercept) and the various forces and operational factors concerning the use and application of the P.I.T. technique and how to forcefully stop, redirect or remove a vehicle in motion from its path or course of travel during the operation of a motor vehicle during pursuit and highway and emergency response performance activities.
The second portion of the training course expands the program to include the application of the T.V.I. techniques to those vehicles that have been forced or removed from their path or course of travel by the P.I.T. technique and to safely terminate the motion or progress of the vehicle, to end the pursuit. The student will learn the T.V.I. technique and the various forces and operational factors concerning the use and application of the technique and how to forcefully stop, immobilize and pin a motor vehicle from further movement or motion during pursuit and highway and emergency response performance activities.
*Disposable Car
Disposable cars are sedan-type vehicles with automatic transmission and are obtainable through your city's impound lots and the cost of towing the car out to DCTC and back to the impound lot plus the depreciative value of the car is tax deductible through DCTC's Foundation a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. PIT/TVI and Advanced Pursuit Refresher Training
Cost: $250
For each officer that attends this course needs to provide a disposable car.*
This course provides both areas of training for those agencies and officers who need to have the POST-mandated pursuit refresher training requirements met for their POST license or need to have recertification in the areas of PIT/TVI pursuit tactics. This course will utilize force-on-force and scenario-based training exercises to fulfill the POST pursuit and emergency-response refresher training requirements.

Pursuit Instructor Course

Ethics, Defensive Driving and Accident Avoidance
Cost: $150
This course is designed for law enforcement agencies that utilizes non-sworn personnel to perform mobile duties and operations in various capacities or for sworn personnel that need a little extra help in mastering the techniques of defensive driving.
The course focuses on non-pursuit, defensive driving tactics and activities to provide greater driving knowledge, preventive techniques, as well as agency liability reduction and risk management. Participants receive in-class instruction in various vehicle concepts and dynamics and will conduct extensive skill development in vehicle driving exercises on the driving range.

Motorcycle Courses - Basic Rider | Advanced Rider
Cost: $160 - Basic Rider | $55 - Advanced Rider
Dakota County Technical College has partnered with the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center (MMSC) a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, to provide one of the most comprehensive safety programs in the world. MMSC and DCTC are committed to reducing motorcycle crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
Basic Rider Course is beneficial to both new and experienced riders; 14.5 POST credits are available for law enforcement personnel who attend this course. The Advanced Rider course is a course that will build upon your existing skills and knowledge for relatively new motorcyclist, returning riders, and experienced motorcyclist can all benefit from this course; 5 POST credits are available for law enforcement personnel who attend this course.

Occupational Spanish for Law Enforcement
Cost: $245 plus book
This program is a 20-hour course designed for law enforcement officers, and 911 dispatchers and is available for POST credit. The purpose is to help first respondents communicate with Spanish speakers in a quick, basic way. It stresses short, simple communication - asking brief questions and giving easy to understand directions or commands. No grammar or prior Spanish necessary.
Offered March 20 - May 8, Thursdays 7:30pm-9:30pm - 16 hours of Spanish Club is required to complete this class. Located at DCTC's Partners in Higher Education building, Apple Valley, Minnesota.
Spanish Club - Come once a week and meet Spanish-speaking individuals that are either learning or maintaining their Spanish in this fun environment. Cost of this is included in the tuition and meets Mondays or Wednesdays from 4:55pm-5:55pm.
