Major Description
This program prepares students to work in a variety of positions in the medical field. Specialized medical courses include medical office procedures, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Students also complete various communications courses and become proficient in current software applications for word processing, spreadsheets and presentation graphics.
Work Environment
Medical administrative specialists are employed in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, insurance companies and other organizations connected to the medical field. Administrative duties include composing correspondence, controlling doctor schedules, preparing professional presentations, scheduling patient appointments, maintaining patient files and transcribing reports.

Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS)
DCTC offers courses that prepare students for the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS) certification exam. MCAS credential validates skills in using the 2007 Microsoft Office system and the Windows Vista operating system, meeting the demand for the most up-to-date skills on the latest Microsoft technologies.
Program Prerequisite
- Students must take a two-minute typing test before enrolling in OFFC1005 Keyboarding/Formatting. Students must achieve a speed of 35 words per minute with five or fewer errors to be admitted to the course.
- If students do not type at this level, they must successfully complete OFFC1000 Basic Keyboarding prior to registering for OFFC1005 Keyboarding/Formatting.
