Disability Services
Dakota County Technical College, in compliance with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is committed to providing an accessible education to students who have disabilities. This brochure provides an overview of the process and services available to eligible students with disabilities. Eligibility
Enrolled students who have a documented disability that significantly limits one or more major life activities (e.g., learning, walking, reading) may be eligible for services.
Some examples include:
- Attention Deficit Disorder
- Visual Impairments
- Chronic or Acute Medical Conditions
- Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Learning Disabilities
- Mobility Impairments
- Psychiatric Disabilities
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
Documenting Disabilities
Accommodations are based on an understanding of the student's disability and its impact upon his/her learning. Current documentation (within 3 yrs) of the disability by an appropriate professional is necessary and will become part of the student's confidential file.
Students who lack documentation but suspect they may qualify for accommodations or would like to look into a suspected disability are encouraged to contact the Disabilities Service Office.
Accommodations/Services
Students may be eligible for a variety of reasonable accommodations and services based on the documentation. The student and the Disability Services Advisor will discuss & develop an accommodation plan each semester.
Some of the most common requests are for:
- Note-taking assistance
- Tests in separate room
- Extended time on tests
- Reader services for tests
- Advocacy services
To Receive Services
- Initiate contact with the Disability Services Advisor.
- Provide appropriate current documentation of a disability from the appropriate diagnostician. (The Disability Services Advisor can provide guidance and a "Documentation Guidelines Form" when necessary.)
- Establish a file and initial Accommodations Plan with the Disability Services office.
- Meet with the Disability Services Advisor to develop an Accommodation Plan.
- Notify instructors of accommodations.
