What is a PIN?

A PIN is a Personal Identification Number that serves as your electronic signature. You need a PIN in order to perform any of the following tasks:

  • Electronically sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web. (Both dependent student and a parent need a PIN).
  • View the status and results of a processed FAFSA application on the FAFSA on the Web site.
  • Access your Federal Student Assistance information on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) Web site.
  • Make updates to the address where your PIN can be mailed.
  • Request a duplicate copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR).
  • Apply for student and parent loans online.
  • Apply online for a PIN!

Parents and financial aid applicants should apply for a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.
