First Thing First!
- Get a PIN - Each student (and a parent of a dependent student) needs a PIN. www.pin.ed.gov.
- Complete Federal Tax Returns if required.
- Assemble student (and parent or spouse) income and asset data.
- Download and print FAFSA "online Pre-Application" worksheets.
- Complete the FAFSA online.
If you do not have web access, call and request a paper FAFSA.
What is a PIN?
A PIN is a Personal Identification Number that serves as your electronic signature. You need a PIN in order to perform any of the following tasks:
- Electronically sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web. (Both dependent student and a parent need a PIN).
- View the status and results of a processed FAFSA application on the FAFSA on the Web site.
- Access your Federal Student Assistance information on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) Web site.
- Make updates to the address where your PIN can be mailed.
- Request a duplicate copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR).
- Apply for student and parent loans online.
- Apply online for a PIN!
Parents and financial aid applicants should apply for a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.
