Upward
Bound Mission
Upward
Bound is a motivational and academically based program designed to assist
students with high school graduation requirements, and to prepare students
for enrollment and completion of post-secondary education. This program
is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsored by Dakota
County Technical College. This program is funded to serve 50 students in grades
9-12 from Henry Sibley and South St. Paul High Schools. All qualified
students are encouraged to apply. However, our policy is to accept those
students we believe best meet the requirements set forth in the federal
guidelines.
Services
Provided
- Academic
tutoring and personal enrichment workshops.
- Receive
stipend (money) during the academic year and summer months based on
attendance and academic performance.
- One-on-one
mentoring with an academic/career advisor.
- Receive
after-school tutoring and counseling sessions twice a week
- A
six-week summer program at Dakota County Technical College. Classes
offered are math, science, english, foreign language, computer skills
and study skills.
- Assistance
with college entrance requirements.
- Parent/Guardian
support and assistance in matters affecting the student's educational
progress.
- Fun
cultural, social and career oriented field trips.
- Access
to computer-based career and post-secondary educational information.
- Financial
aid and scholarship information and assistance.
- Meet
new friends!
Eligible
Participants
Upward
Bound assists students who meet the following criteria:
- Students who are low
income and/or potential first generation college student.
- Students who maintain
a GPA of 2.0 or better and has the potential for academic success in
post-secondary education.
- Students who have consistent
class attendance.
- Students who are committed
to graduating from high school.
- Students who are committed
to pursuing a post-secondary program.
- Students who are committed
to the Upward Bound program requirements.
- Students who are
a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
