Chris Tran's educational background includes a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the studies of Sociology, Ethnic and Multicultural Studies, and Human Services Planning and Administration from Minnesota State Mankato. His direct work experience in human services and diversity started in with Southern Minnesota Initiatives Foundation (SMIF), a nonprofit that focuses on economic development and community vitality for 20 southern counties. As a program coordinator, his role was to chair a steering committee and coordinate community forums on diversity dialogue and affordable and transitional housing.
Six months into his role at SMIF, Chris was offered and accepted the opportunity to come back to his alma mater, Minnesota State Mankato, to promote cultural diversity on campus and serve under-prepared and under-represented college students. In his nine plus years there under the Division of Institutional Diversity, he took on various roles: Director for Asian American Affairs; Director of Intercultural Center; and Director for Diversity Recruitment. His work included budgeting, initiating, planning, developing, administering, delivering, and evaluating programs and services that addressed recruitment, retention, and educational success of underserved population. These programs and services included financial literacy, transitioning from high school to college, understanding the financial aid process and student loans, service-learning and leadership development, community resources for students in crisis, and academic and cultural counseling. Another important leadership role he took on was serving as chair for the President’s Commission on Diversity working with all campus entities in educating and promoting the message of access and opportunities in accordance with system wide campaign on diversity. In the community, Chris served as one of the Prejudice Reduction Workshop Facilitators under the Greater Mankato Diversity Council, facilitated in K-12 classrooms across public schools in the Mankato area.
In his current role as Social & Community Resources Navigator at Dakota County Technical College (DCTC), he works with students to identify and remove personal and social barrier(s) that may hinder their academic success. Chris truly enjoys the work of advocating for and supporting educational success of all students and he is thankful that here at DCTC, he has the opportunity to do it every day.
